A SINGLE LIGHT UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE AND DATABASE RELEASE

Updated Version Features Added Functionality and Improved Interface

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Nov. 15, 2006A Single Light, a student-run non-profit organization, announced today that the new version of the organization's website, which includes its unique cancer-resource database, is in operation. The website has undergone major improvements in both design and functionality capabilities.

“We have gone through tremendous growth in the past months, and we have put together a team of dedicated volunteer professionals,” says ASL Director of Technology David Tang, who worked on the update together with the team of San Jose State University students. “We are making steady progress,” he adds.

The website and the database now have an improved user-friendly interface that makes browsing and accessing information more intuitive. The database has been equipped with an advanced search option allowing users to find cancer resources by keywords. The list of resource and cancer service categories has also been expanded. Furthermore, the website now includes a section where representatives from cancer-related organizations can submit information about their companies and services directly to the database.

The new version of the website further features an imbedded software content-management system. This will allow implementing future updates in a more convenient and faster manner.

"This is a step forward that gives more professionalism and credibility to A Single Light. It also shows commitment to our mission," says ASL President Nathaniel Montgomery. "We now have a professional-looking and well-functioning product. I'm really proud of the technology team.”

The next database and website update is due in the first quarter of 2007. Among other improvements, the version will allow cancer-related organizations already in the database to login on the website and personally change or update their information.

About ASL Database

The database provides an extensive catalog of cancer-related organizations complete with contact information and a list of services each company offers. The database is designed to increase accessibility to outreach and service organizations by providing a centralized location where people can search to find help that matches their needs. It is available free of charge to anyone with Internet access.

The database has been in operation since February 2006, and since then it has been continually modified and improved. President Montgomery says that over the year, over 500 organizations in the Bay Area have been identified, and over 150 organizations are already in the database. The organization’s goal is to cover all the organizations in the Bay Area, then in California, and then, eventually, in the United States.

Unlike other cancer-related resources, ASL Database is a unique project since it provides extensive information about each organization and service complete with addresses, phone numbers, hours of operation, and all the information necessary to gain access to the services offered by each organization. No resource of the same scope and functionality exist.
